Here are Four Companies That Are Using or Trying to Incorporate Data Mesh
Zhamak Dehghani’s data mesh concept caught the eye of Intuit, a global tech platform that creates business software for individuals, accountants, and small businesses. As such, the company has endeavored to apply its own data mesh strategy to its data systems to improve its data-driven systems.
Intuit faced several challenges in its quest to enable the rapid development of new systems, such as data discoverability (where to find data), data understandability (the data’s schema and who can approve access to data), and data trust (the quality of the data and who’s responsible for supporting the data if it fails). The company also encountered issues with data consumption and data publications.
Despite the numerous challenges it faced, Intuit pressed on to gather new insights and define its data mesh strategy to enable it to create and implement capable data-driven systems. Part of its data mesh strategy involved applying a systematic approach when it came to organizing key elements in data mesh architecture, which are people, code, and data. Intuit also worked on the ownership aspect of data, as well as providing its teams with solutions that will enable them to build, deploy, and operate data products.
It’s worth noting that Intuit’s Tristan Baker is aware that the company is still in the early stages of data mesh implementation and that there’s yet to be a standard for what a data mesh should look like.
2. JPMorgan Chase
JPMorgan Chase is another example of a data-driven enterprise that’s using data mesh to optimize how it uses its massive body of data. While it recognizes the need to make data easily accessible and shareable within an organization, JPMC also understands that it needs to maintain control over how data is shared.
JPMC believes that implementing a data mesh architecture can help it align its data technology with its data products. Its data mesh architecture is designed to enable data product owners who are experts in their domain manage each data product lake. These key personnel can also make the necessary decisions needed when it comes to data management.
Furthermore, by using data mesh, JPMC can share the data its needs from its product lakes, effectively minimizing any discrepancies and storage issues. Plus, using a data mesh can enhance the visibility of data consumption across different enterprises.
Prior to using data mesh, JPMC’s team would generate reports using data gathered from multiple systems in different data domains. With data mesh, the data product owners can now conveniently make all the necessary data available in data lakes.
Zalando is one of the early adopters of data mesh architecture. The European online fashion platform migrated from data lakes to data mesh in a bid to speed up the creation of true data products, which are secure, interoperable, and addressable, and to make high-quality data more accessible and available, as data quality is often hampered when using centralized data lakes.
In 2020, HSBC revealed its intent to launch a new data mesh platform as part of its data strategy that will enable its clients to receive select trade data, such as client’s data from their net asset value (NAV). The global financial institution is looking to move its massive data to external cloud providers, which will allow it to respond to its client’s needs in a timely manner.
By moving its data to this new platform, HSBC will also be able to keep massive amounts of data without having to worry about removing anything from its system. Furthermore, this platform will give its clients the option to take other data set that are relevant to their NAV validation data.
